The Statewide Housing Action Coalition is a broad-based low-income housing advocacy organization. Our mission is to promote public policy initiatives to preserve and increase affordable housing opportunities in the state and raise public awareness on issues related to affordable housing. Our work at the federal, state, and local levels includes:

Public Policy Advocacy

SHAC maintains a presence at the State House and in DC for affordable, safe, and appropriate housing. We promote and support federal and state legislation advancing affordable housing production, homeownership, fair housing, permanent supportive housing, lead safety, and income supports. SHAC closely monitors new and existing funding sources. We have taken a lead in the state against detrimental federal budget cuts, consolidations, and regulatory changes.

Organizing

SHAC is building allies within communities across the state on issues related to affordable housing. We are working with city and town managers, councils, and planners on the changes to the Low and Moderate Income Housing Act.

Public Education

SHAC works with other advocacy organizations to educate the general public, elected officials, and community groups on the need for and nature of affordable housing.

Collaboration

SHAC is a member of the HousingWorks RI campaign to promote affordable housing in Rhode Island. SHAC is also Rhode Island's lead agency for the New England Housing Network and National Low Income Housing Coalition.
